Be a Part of History

The Buehler Home story is a testament to the philanthropic spirit of Phoebe Buehler and the love she had for her husband, Christian, a Peoria business icon. Throughout their lives together, Christian and Phoebe were committed to “giving back” to the people who had been responsible for the Buehler’s success.

It was Phoebe’s ongoing interest in improving the lives of older adults that would spark the idea of creating a dedicated residence to serve them. In memoriam of her husband, her will called for the creation of what is now Buehler Home.

1932 – The Christian Buehler Home opens its doors to the first eight residents with Louis Amberg, Sr. serving as the general manager. The three-story building accommodates 125 rooms, a 12-bed infirmary, and shared living space that includes dining rooms, a kitchen and a library.

1957 – Renovations increase capacity to 190 rooms and enlarge the infirmary to accommodate 32 residents. Recreational areas, lounges and a larger dining room are added.

1966 – Brothers, Louis E. Amberg, Jr. and John H. Amberg take over operations.

1973 – Twenty townhomes are built on the Buehler Home Campus to provide more independent living opportunities.

1983 – Additional construction and remodeling take place to include the addition of the Health Care Center and 100 new apartments.

1988 – Richard L. Amberg, grandson of Louis Amberg, Sr., assumes responsibility for managing Buehler Home.

2004 – Twelve private rooms are added to the Health Care Center, bringing the capacity to 78 residents.

2007 – Buehler Home marks its 75th anniversary

2009 – Buehler Home begins a campus renovation adding 12 independent living apartment homes and expanding the Health Care Center with additional private rooms.

Since its founding, more than 1500 residents have called this extraordinary community home. As we grow and expand, our leadership team and dedicated staff remain just as focused on honoring Phoebe Buehler’s vision and mission.
